CASE STUDY

Hurstbourne

For a home of this scale, flooring has to do more than provide a beautiful backdrop. It needs to create a sense of continuity from one room to the next, complement the architecture and furnishings, and bring warmth and texture to spaces with very different purposes.

At Hurstbourne in Wentworth, Surrey, Eaton Square delivered a considered flooring scheme combining luxury carpet and bespoke rugs across the principal living spaces, bedrooms, dining room and home office. The result is an elegant and understated interior where each flooring choice has its own character, while remaining part of a cohesive whole.

Bespoke Rugs Designed for the Interior

Throughout Hurstbourne, bespoke rugs were used to define individual spaces while allowing the beautiful timber flooring beneath to remain visible.

Rather than simply filling a room, each rug was carefully proportioned around the furniture and architecture. In the principal bedroom, separate rugs create distinct areas for sleeping and relaxing, while their subtle borders introduce definition without interrupting the calm, tonal scheme.

Beauty lies in the restraint

The same considered approach can be seen in the formal living areas, where generous rugs anchor the furniture and bring softness to the expansive rooms. The beauty lies in the restraint. Neutral tones, generous proportions and beautifully finished borders allow the rugs to complement the interior rather than compete with it.

Mulberry: Softness with a Tailored Finish

For the bedrooms, living areas and home office, Eaton Square's Mulberry collection was selected. Mulberry combines a thick, cushioned pile with a silky appearance, creating a particularly luxurious surface while retaining the durability required for everyday living. The collection is available in six carefully considered neutral shades and can be produced either as fitted carpet or made to measure area rugs.

For Hurstbourne, the bespoke rug format allowed the flooring to respond precisely to each room. The detailed edging is particularly effective. As the close up photography shows, the rug is finished with a beautifully executed mitred fabric border, creating a crisp transition between the softness of the pile and the character of the timber beneath. It is a small detail, but one that makes the finished piece feel truly bespoke.

Amalfi: Contemporary Luxury with a Sustainable Story

Eaton Square's Amalfi collection was also specified within the project. Amalfi has a very different character. Its tip sheared woven construction creates a subtle lustre, allowing the surface to respond beautifully to changing light. Made using 100% recycled ECONYL® nylon, including material recovered from fishing nets and other nylon waste, it combines a sophisticated appearance with impressive durability.

A Bespoke Axminster for the Dining Room

The formal dining room called for something more individual. Here, bespoke Axminster provided the opportunity to create a rug specifically for the proportions and character of the room.

Eaton Square's bespoke Axminster carpets offer considerable freedom in colour, pattern, width and design. The weaving process allows highly defined patterns to be created using pre-dyed yarn, giving both clarity of design and lasting depth of colour.

Responding to the architecture of the room

At Hurstbourne, the finished rug sits beautifully beneath the long dining table, its sweeping shape responding to the architecture of the room while the abstract pattern introduces movement against the more formal furniture and decorative detailing. Rather than simply sitting beneath the dining table, the rug becomes part of the room's composition.

The Importance of Detail

What makes the flooring at Hurstbourne particularly successful is not one dramatic gesture, but the consistency of the detailing throughout.

The scale of each rug has been considered in relation to the furniture. Borders are clean and precisely finished. Colours have been chosen to sit quietly alongside the surrounding materials. And the transition between soft flooring and timber has been used deliberately to give larger rooms structure.

This is where bespoke flooring comes into its own. Instead of adapting an interior around standard dimensions and predetermined finishes, the flooring can be designed around the architecture and the way each room will be used.

A Considered Approach to Luxury Flooring

Hurstbourne demonstrates the role flooring can play in creating a sophisticated residential interior. From the soft, understated character of Mulberry to the contemporary performance of Amalfi and the creative possibilities of bespoke Axminster, each product was chosen for a different purpose while contributing to the same overall design language.

For Eaton Square, projects such as Hurstbourne are about more than supplying carpet and rugs. They are about understanding the interior as a whole and delivering flooring where proportion, material, colour and craftsmanship come together in the finished space.
